Jowai, June 19: The Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM), Western Region, has formally submitted a representation to the Chief Executive Officer and Charge Census Officer, Jowai Municipal Board, regarding the ongoing preparations for Census 2027 under the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990.

In its submission, the organisation expressed concern over the engagement of school teachers in census duties. While acknowledging the importance of the national census exercise, JSM emphasised that teachers are already entrusted with the critical responsibility of educating and shaping the future of students.

Assigning them additional census-related duties during the academic session may disrupt the teaching-learning process and place unnecessary stress on them.

The JSM, Western Region, has therefore urged the Government to exempt school teachers from census duties and instead consider appointing enumerators from local authorities and communities.

The organisation further suggested that educated individuals within local areas—including staff of local authorities, Village Councils, Dorbar Shnong members, volunteers, and other suitable residents—can be effectively engaged for the census work. According to JSM, such an approach would not only ensure smooth and efficient conduct of the census but also promote greater local participation and community ownership in this important national exercise.

The JSM expressed hope that the Government will give due consideration to this request in the larger interest of students, the education system, and the successful implementation of Census 2027.
