VANCOUVER, June 20: New Zealand and Egypt will both be chasing a long-awaited first World Cup victory when they meet in a crucial Group G encounter at BC Place on Sunday.
After opening their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaigns with draws, both sides know that a win could significantly improve their chances of reaching the knockout stages. With the group still finely balanced, the contest in Vancouver has taken on added importance.
New Zealand produced an encouraging display in their opening match against Iran but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after surrendering the lead twice. Elijah Just emerged as the hero for the All Whites, scoring both goals and becoming only the second player in the current squad to reach double figures in international goals. The Oceania representatives had entered the tournament with questions surrounding their attacking options beyond captain Chris Wood, but Just’s impressive performance helped ease some of those concerns.
