Kansas City, June 21: Goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a sensational display, making 15 saves as Curacao held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw and secured the tiny Caribbean nation’s first-ever World Cup point on Saturday.
The 37-year-old, who helped Curacao qualify for its maiden World Cup with a decisive performance against Jamaica last year, delivered one of the finest goalkeeping displays in tournament history. His 15 saves left him just one short of the World Cup record of 16 set by American goalkeeper Tim Howard in 2014.
Room repeatedly frustrated Ecuador’s attackers, denying veteran striker Enner Valencia early in the match before producing a string of outstanding saves in the second half against Moises Caicedo, Valencia and others. The result was a major setback for Ecuador, who dominated possession and created numerous chances but could not find a way past the inspired Curacao goalkeeper. The draw also confirmed Germany as Group E winners following their 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast earlier in the day.
While neither side has been eliminated, Ecuador now face a must-win final group match against Germany, while Curacao will take on Ivory Coast with hopes of reaching the knockout stage still alive. (AP)
