Miami, June 22: When the final whistle blew after Cabo Verde’s historic draw against Spain at the FIFA World Cup, goalkeeper Vozinha could not hold back his tears.
The 40-year-old had just helped his nation earn its first-ever World Cup point with a remarkable goalkeeping display. Yet amid the celebrations, one thought overshadowed everything else. His mother was not there to witness it.Thousands of kilometres away on the island of Sao Vicente in Cabo Verde, Ana Candida Evora watched her son’s finest hour on television. Visa complications had prevented her from travelling to the United States, forcing her to experience the biggest moment of his career from home. For Vozinha, whose full name is Josimar Jose Evora Dias, the absence was deeply painful.
The veteran goalkeeper later revealed that his emotions after the Spain match were not only about football. Raised largely by his grandparents, who have since passed away, he wished his closest family members could have shared the occasion with him.His words touched hearts across the football world. What followed was a remarkable display of kindness and community spirit. As news of Ana’s situation spread, people from different backgrounds joined forces to help. Football officials, local authorities, FIFA representatives and even a businessman living in Cabo Verde stepped in to assist. The efforts gathered momentum and, within days, the obstacles that had kept her away were resolved.Ana embarked on a journey lasting more than 24 hours from her island home in the Atlantic Ocean to Miami. When she finally arrived at the stadium ahead of Cabo Verde’s second group match against Uruguay, she carried her nation’s flag and wore a jersey bearing her son’s name and number. For the first time at a World Cup, mother and son were reunited on football’s grandest stage. As Vozinha warmed up on the pitch, fans applauded when his image appeared on the giant screens. Many already knew the story. It had become one of the tournament’s most heartwarming moments.
Ana watched proudly from the stands as her son once again represented his country against one of South America’s traditional powers. Cabo Verde fought bravely to earn a 2-2 draw, continuing their dream start to the competition. For Ana, however, the result was secondary.
She had always believed in her son.
After the Spain match, she confidently declared that no ball would find its way past him.
The prediction proved accurate as Vozinha produced seven saves to secure a historic clean sheet. Her faith had never wavered, even during the difficult years. (Agencies)
