New York, June 22: Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has become the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket history, overtaking compatriot Chris Gayle during a Major League Cricket match in the United States.
The 39-year-old achieved the milestone while playing for MI New York, scoring a century that took his career T20 tally to 14,583 runs, moving past Gayle’s record of 14,562 runs.
Pollard’s remarkable tally includes 1,569 runs in T20 Internationals, with the majority of his runs coming in domestic and franchise competitions across the globe. Gayle, who last played competitive T20 cricket in 2022, had held the record since March 2014.
The landmark came despite MI New York suffering a 30-run defeat to Washington Freedom. Pollard’s innings was also only the second T20 century of his long and illustrious career.
Pollard already holds the record for the most appearances in T20 cricket, having featured in 736 matches. Renowned for his power-hitting and finishing ability, he is the only middle-order batter among the leading run-scorers in the format, with the others predominantly opening or top-order batters.
