SHILLONG, June 22: The Union Agriculture Ministry has raised serious concerns over seed shortages in Jharkhand and Nagaland for the ongoing Kharif season, while several Northeastern states, including Meghalaya, are left with minimal buffer stocks that could spell trouble if the monsoon remains erratic.
Meghalaya with 17,279 quintals of seed stock comes in the list of states that only just meets requirements, leaving almost no room for crop switching or monsoon delays.
Farmers and agriculture officials in the state have been directed to assess district-level requirements immediately, especially for drought-tolerant and short-duration varieties, and coordinate with the National Seeds Corporation to avoid any last-minute shortages during this critical sowing window.
