SHILLONG, June 22: Reigniting the recent controversy over the alleged favouritism in awarding massive public contracts to a single outside firm, with questions being raised about transparency, local participation, and the outflow of funds from the state, the state BJP on Monday batted for support to local and capable contractors in government projects.
Referring to the allegations of favouritism in allocation of PHE projects worth around Rs 1,900 crore, BJP Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang urged the NPP-led MDA Government to split such massive projects and hand over the work to proven local contractors who have demonstrated their capability time and again.
He pointed out that even though the government claims to maintain transparency in the tendering process, there is no harm in splitting the projects.
“If local contractors can undertake the work, the project must be split rather than giving it in wholesale to outside companies by depriving local contractors who have proved their mettle every time,” he added.
