MAWKYRWAT, June 22: The Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong (SRS) Nobosohphoh Syiemship has expressed concern that internal disagreements over the location of a proposed Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Block in the Shiliang Um Rilang area could lead the state government to scrap the project.
The concern follows Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar’s recent announcement that the government plans to establish a new block in this region of South West Khasi Hills. However, two local groups—the Mawnore Block Demand Committee and the Mawsaw Block Demand Committee—are competing to have the headquarters established in Warsan Lyngdoh and Mawsaw, respectively.
“We are concerned about the fate of the upcoming block because the two committees are pursuing separate agendas,” said SRS Nobosohphoh Syiemship President Bokstone Thongni. “We fear that the state government may view this lack of consensus negatively, and we could lose the block entirely if a location cannot be agreed upon.”
Thongni urged both committees to reach an understanding for the collective benefit of the Shiliang Um Rilang area. While he credited both groups for advocating for a project that residents have sought for decades, he stressed that unity is required to ensure the block is established before 2027.
