SHILLONG, June 23: Former Congress and NPP leader Mohendro Rapsang formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday along with a large group of supporters, triggering visible signs of discontent within the party’s state unit even as preparations for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election gather pace.
Rapsang was welcomed into the BJP fold by state president Rikman G. Momin in the presence of Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai and other leaders at the party’s state office. Momin made it clear that no ticket assurance was given to the new entrant. “In BJP, there is no assurance of a party ticket to anyone,” he stated, while hinting that more leaders could join in the coming days.
Rapsang, who had earlier served as West Shillong MLA (2018-2023), said he joined to strengthen the party and would contest the 2028 Assembly elections only if given the opportunity. He expressed no regrets over his past associations with Congress and NPP, and affirmed his commitment to the BJP. He also downplayed concerns over national issues affecting local prospects, saying he would engage directly with voters.
However, the induction has exposed rifts. Party insiders revealed that several senior leaders were not adequately informed in advance and learned of the development through external sources or late-night messages. Only a small group, led by Shullai, attended the programme, with others staying away in what was seen as a silent protest. Sources alleged a concentration of decision-making among a select few, raising fears of deepening divisions ahead of the by-election.
The unease follows earlier resistance within the party to the proposed induction of former MLA P.N. Syiem. Disgruntled leaders may now approach the central leadership, potentially complicating the party’s organisational unity.
Momin and party’s general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna rejected allegations of discord. Pohshna claimed senior leaders, including Cabinet ministers and the state president, were present and informed via WhatsApp groups. He acknowledged some might have missed the event but insisted the party remained united and focused on strengthening its base in West Shillong.
On the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election—necessitated by the demise of MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon in February—Momin said no candidate has been finalised. The decision rests with the central leadership in Delhi, and the party is awaiting the Election Commission’s schedule while continuing ground preparations.
