SHILLONG, June 23: A proposal has been initiated to install a life-size statue of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah at Mihmyntdu in Jowai, with a request made to the Transport department for allotment of government land to facilitate the project.
According to an official communication on Tuesday, Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai has written to Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar seeking the allotment of approximately 10,000 square feet of vacant land belonging to the Transport Department at Mihmyntdu.
The letter stated that local MLA and Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla undertook an initiative for a joint inspection to identify a suitable site for the proposed installation of the statue. Representatives of the Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong Jowai Pyllun, the Jaintia Students’ Union, and teachers and members of the Kiang Nangbah Government College and Kiang Nangbah College Students’ Union attended the inspection.
During the inspection, the vacant Transport Department land along the main road in Mihmyntdu was identified as a suitable location for the project. Participants in the meeting reportedly agreed to request the transfer or allotment of the land to the Arts and Culture Department for the installation process to move forward.
The proposal also includes naming the site as “U Kiang Nangbah Square” in honour of the revered Jaintia freedom fighter, remembered for leading the resistance against British rule in the Jaintia Hills.
In his communication, Shullai stated that the proposed memorial would serve as a source of pride for the people of the Jaintia region and Meghalaya as a whole.
