TURA, June 24: Social activist Greneth Sangma has joined Tura MDC Bernard N Marak in criticising the omission of the word ‘Autonomous’ from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) official logos and receipts.
Sangma stated that the omission is not a mere administrative error but a direct challenge to the constitutional framework of the Sixth Schedule, which guarantees self-governance and protection to tribal communities.
“Removing the word ‘Autonomous’ strips the body of its foundational identity. Without its autonomous status, the council is weakened, leaving tribal rights vulnerable. This appears to be a systemic attempt to undermine the council’s independence and make it subservient to state control,” Sangma said.
The activist urged the GHADC Executive Committee (EC) to immediately restore the word ‘Autonomous’ to all official materials. He further called for an emergency General Body Meeting to address the issue transparently and prevent further erosion of tribal autonomy.
