Tura, June 25: With Williamnagar police failing to arrest the accused involved in the gruesome murder of a young girl, who was hacked to death at Samgong locality last year, the GSU, East Zone Williamnagar on Thursday demanded a fresh independent inquiry into the incident, the production of the action taken report of the magisterial inquiry as well as compensation to the victim’s family.

In its representation addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the union expressed concern that despite the passing of one year, the accused in the case has not been arrested till date. It added that while it was learnt that magisterial inquiry into the incident has already been conducted, no visible action has been taken on the findings nor any officer or authority been held accountable for lapses, if  any.

Reminding that the victim’s family has yet to receive any compensation, support or reassurance from the government or justice, the union expressed shock that the accused so far has managed to evade arrest by the police in a crime of such magnitude.

The union urged the government to intervene and order a fresh independent inquiry or to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly examine all aspects of the case, expedite the arrest of the accused as well as to take action against anyone found negligent in the discharge of their duties.
