SHILLONG, June 24: Leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday encouraged students interning at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to aspire for leadership roles in their chosen fields, stressing that leadership is not confined to politics.
The interaction involved fifth-semester students from St Anthony’s College, St Edmund’s College, Shillong Commerce College, KL Bajoria College, and Synod College. The students are currently interning with the Assembly’s Law Department as part of the 120-hour programme mandated by the National Education Policy (NEP).
During the session, students questioned Sangma on his political career, public life, and advice for the youth. Sangma described the exchange as an opportunity to discuss governance and the importance of learning beyond academic disciplines, urging students to broaden their knowledge to remain competitive.
When asked what motivated him to enter politics as a medical professional, Sangma recalled his decision at age 27 to enter public life while still practicing as a doctor.
Addressing the group, he noted that institutions like St Anthony’s and St Edmund’s have produced many of the region’s prominent politicians and civil servants. He told the interns that while everyone begins as a follower, they should have the confidence to eventually lead in their respective careers.
“Leadership is required in every profession,” Sangma said, encouraging the students to aim to lead rather than merely follow.
