SHILLONG, June 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased Meghalaya’s renowned GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric to world leaders during the 52nd G7 Summit in Evian, France, putting the state’s “golden spice” on the global stage alongside other iconic Indian heritage products.
The carefully curated gifts presented by the Prime Minister also included Ramban Honey from Jammu and Kashmir, Nagauri Ashwagandha from Rajasthan, and a handwoven Banarasi silk stole from Uttar Pradesh. These selections highlighted India’s rich cultural heritage, traditional knowledge systems, sustainable agricultural practices, and centuries-old craftsmanship.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma welcomed the development and expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister. In a post on X, Sangma stated: “Meghalaya’s globally renowned GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric takes center stage yet again at the #G7 Summit, presented to world leaders by Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi ji. Thank you, Hon’ble Prime Minister, for showcasing Meghalaya’s golden spice to the world and highlighting the rich agricultural heritage and potential of our farmers.”
Lakadong turmeric, cultivated in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, is prized for its exceptionally high curcumin content, attributed to the region’s fertile red soil, heavy rainfall, and traditional farming practices. It holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, underscoring its unique quality and origin.
This recognition at the G7 Summit further boosts the visibility of Meghalaya’s agricultural produce and opens new avenues for its farmers on the global market.
The development comes amid ongoing state efforts to promote organic spices, including recent exports of Lakadong turmeric to countries like the Netherlands and the UK.
