TURA, June 25: Former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), P.K. Sangma passed away on Thursday morning in Williamnagar after a brief spell of illness.
Sangma was undergoing treatment prior to his death.
He was a noted figure in local political circles and led the GHADC as CEM in 2009 as a MDC from the Nationalist Congress Party. He returned as CEM in 2011 after joining the Congress following a mass move by MDCs.He was also a former president of the Garo Students’ Union before making his foray into politics.
Sangma’s death has led to an outpouring of condolences from across Garo Hills with him being seen as an active youth and later, a popular political leader for the entire region. His funeral service is expected to be held on Friday.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma condoled the passing of the former CEM and veteran leader.
The CM expressed his heartfelt grief over the loss, honouring the late leader’s long-serving tenure as MDC and his dedicated public service in Garo Hills.
He also highlighted P.K. Sangma’s grassroots connection, leadership during times of political instability, and tireless contributions to the people.
