SHILLONG, June 25: Marking a decade of advocacy for the rights and livelihoods of the vendor community, the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association celebrated its 10th anniversary at All Saints Hall on Thursday.
The event brought together vendors from across the city, alongside social activist Angela Rangad, Pastor Pyrtuh, and other community leaders. Speakers at the gathering highlighted the significant contribution of street vendors to the local economy and called for their recognition as essential stakeholders in urban development. They stressed the need for inclusive policies that balance the city’s growth with the livelihood concerns of vendors.
The celebration included a cultural programme featuring performances by a troupe led by artist Lapdiang Syiem and singer Tipriti Kharbangar.
As part of the anniversary, the association has scheduled three days of additional programmes at All Saints Hall, including exhibitions and public markets to promote local products.
During a general meeting held the same day, office-bearers reviewed the organisation’s progress over the last decade and outlined future plans to enhance member welfare and strengthen the association’s role in Shillong’s economic landscape.
