JOWAI, June 25: A delegation of the Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur has urged Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat to enact legislation protecting the matrilineal system of clan lineage.
Meeting the CEM, the delegation emphasised the need to codify the traditional system under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard the social and cultural identity of the Khasi and Jaintia people.
The clan elders proposed a legal mechanism to recognise the Dorbar Kur (clan organisation) and empower the Rangbah Kur (clan elders). They argued that formal recognition is necessary for elders to effectively perform their customary roles in preserving traditions and lineage practices. The delegation stated that such legislation would reinforce customary institutions and protect the unique matrilineal heritage for future generations.
