SHILLONG, June 27: Sanker on Saturday observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking through a series of programmes highlighting the need for early intervention and collective action to combat addiction.
The observance commenced with a bike rally across Shillong to disseminate information on the hazards of substance abuse and trafficking.
The event also featured a musical performance by in-patients, symbolising resilience and recovery. During the programme, several recovering patients were felicitated for maintaining long-term sobriety, including one individual who was recognised with a state government award.
Sanker Director Dr. Sandi Syiem stated that tackling the drug menace requires active participation from families, communities, and government agencies. He noted that awareness and sustained support are essential for helping individuals return to productive lives.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. D. Khonglah clarified common misconceptions about addiction, explaining that drugs are chemicals that alter brain chemistry and influence behaviour.
She stressed that prevention must begin at an early stage by creating supportive environments for children and teaching them self-control and social skills.
Dr. Khonglah also pointed to emerging challenges, noting that trafficking networks have become increasingly sophisticated, often using online platforms and the dark web. She suggested that while modern technology poses new threats, it can also be used as a tool to aid recovery alongside conventional treatment methods. The programme concluded with a reminder that recovery is achievable through proper guidance and strong family involvement.
Youth campaign in Ri-Bhoi
Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) Ri-Bhoi on Saturday observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking through a youth club development campaign at Tamulkuchi Darbar Hall, Byrnihat.

During the campaign, Convener of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Himanta Timung, in his address as the chief guest, highlighted the growing threat of substance abuse among the youths.
He urged young people to act as ambassadors for change, stressing that awareness and community participation are the most effective tools to combat addiction.
Mary Synrem, Programme Manager of DISHA Cluster Nongpoh, discussed the link between drug abuse, HIV/AIDS transmission, and public health.
Synrem emphasised the necessity of early intervention, counselling, and robust community support systems.
The session also featured a personal testimony from Elias Syiemlieh, who shared his experiences to encourage responsible life choices among the participants.
A central highlight of the programme was the administration of the Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge, led by Clinical Service Officer Greenicia Jyrwa, where participants committed to a drug-free lifestyle.
To promote grassroots engagement, the organisers distributed sports materials to eight youth clubs from the Byrnihat and Patharkhmah areas. Prizes were also awarded to winners of a previously held anti-drug quiz and poster competition.
The programme concluded with a call for collective responsibility in the fight against narcotics under the message ‘Say No to Drugs–Say Yes to Life’.
