Texas giraffe Gracie found after going missing

Texas Hill Country (US), June 28: Gracie the giraffe has been found safe after disappearing for about two weeks from a remote private ranch in Texas, where she had wandered off into the open Hill Country terrain. The 3-year-old giraffe, weighing around 1,200 pounds, was located about four miles south of her enclosure during an aerial search, according to local authorities.
Real County Sheriff Nathan Johnson said Gracie was spotted near a pond and creek surrounded by vegetation, suggesting she had been surviving comfortably in the wild.
Her owner, Vick Jones, confirmed she appeared to be in good condition, noting that she was standing calmly and showing normal behaviour. He added that she likely had been in that area for about a week.
Gracie had reportedly left her enclosure after moving into a rocky feeding area and passing through a gate she had not previously used. Once outside, she continued moving in the same direction, eventually becoming lost in private land that is largely inaccessible by road. The region’s rugged terrain required a helicopter-assisted search before she was found.
Veterinarians and ranch staff are now preparing a careful operation to bring her back safely.
Gracie will first be sedated, fitted with protective equipment, and then transported using specialised trailers designed for tall animals. Officials said the process may take time due to difficult terrain and logistical challenges.
The Texas Hill Country, known for its large population of exotic animals, has previously reported sightings of escaped species such as zebras, buffalo, and monkeys, though giraffes are rare in such incidents. Authorities noted that the area’s mild climate and abundant vegetation made it possible for Gracie to survive comfortably during her time away from the ranch.
Jones said the enclosure will now be reinforced with fencing, as Gracie had not previously been restricted from the rocky area she wandered into.
He added that she will remain in a secure enclosure once she is returned. Despite her size, he said the giraffe posed no threat to humans and would likely avoid contact if approached. (AP)
