Foxborough, June 30: Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill’s heroics in the dramatic penalty shootout win over Germany capped a remarkable journey from financial hardship to World Cup stardom.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who saved two penalties to send Paraguay into the Round of 16, had little hint of a glittering future just a few years ago. In 2022, after his son Lautaro was born prematurely and his wife Melissa Avalos underwent emergency surgery, Gill was forced to sell his football kit and personal belongings to support his family.
According to his wife, the family struggled financially during the difficult period, with Gill even parting with his Paraguay Under-20 jersey to cover medical expenses.
Gill had made only three senior club appearances before January 2025. His fortunes changed after joining Argentine club San Lorenzo on loan, where he established himself in the first team and earned his maiden Paraguay call-up.
He made his senior international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Peru last September and soon cemented his place as Paraguay’s first-choice goalkeeper.
After conceding four goals against the United States in Paraguay’s opening World Cup match, Gill has been outstanding, letting in just one goal over the next three matches while producing a string of crucial saves.
His finest moment came against Germany, where he denied two penalty takers in the shootout to earn FIFA’s Player of the Match award.
Gill dedicated the honour to his family and his nephew Alexander, who is currently hospitalised in Paraguay.
“Alexander, this trophy is for you. I hope you get better soon. Your godfather is supporting you from a distance,” Gill said after the match.
From selling his possessions to keep his family afloat to becoming Paraguay’s World Cup hero, Gill’s story has become one of the tournament’s most inspiring. (Agencies)
