Shillong, June 30: Tlangnuam FC created history by becoming the first club from Mizoram and the Northeast to win the AIFF Futsal Club Championship after defeating Progressive Sports Academy of Gujarat 9-5 in the final of the 2025-26 edition in Bhavnagar on Sunday.
The Mizoram side produced an impressive attacking display to outclass the hosts, extending a slender 3-2 half-time lead with a flurry of second-half goals to clinch the national title in style.
Lalremtluanga, Lalsangkima and David Laltlansanga scored two goals each, while Kiran Chhetri, PC Lalremruata and K. Roluahpuia also found the net in a dominant performance by coach Joshuah Vaz’s team.
Tlangnuam also earned individual honours, with goalkeeper Malhar Shah being named the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper. Progressive Sports Academy’s Lalsawmpuia was adjudged Best Player, while teammate Nikhil Mali finished as the top scorer with 13 goals.
The Gujarat side also received the Fair Play Award.Tlangnuam’s title-winning campaign was marked by a series of emphatic victories.
They topped Group B after hammering FC Bushahr 14-2 and Coramandal FC 13-1 before producing the biggest win in the tournament’s history, thrashing Young Hearts FC 23-0 in the quarterfinals.
They then defeated defending champions Goal Hunterz of Delhi 10-4 in the semifinals to book their place in the final.
The fifth edition of the national championship featured 13 teams from across the country. Meghalaya did not participate, as the state currently does not have an active futsal league. The only previous state league was held in the 2021-22 season, when Niaw Wasa FC represented Meghalaya at the national championship but exited in the group stage.
