City school’s boarding facility launched

SHILLONG, July 2: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday told students that government jobs can no longer absorb the thousands of youth entering the workforce annually, urging them to look toward entrepreneurship and private enterprise as the future of employment in Meghalaya.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed boarding facility at Pine Mount School, the Chief Minister said the state is focusing on tourism, information technology, agriculture, and food processing to create new opportunities. He encouraged students to move beyond conventional career paths and identify local challenges that can be solved through sustainable business models.
The inauguration follows a commitment Sangma made in October 2022 after visiting the school, where students had highlighted unsafe living conditions, including leaking roofs and damaged floors. “Interacting directly with the students prompted the government to intervene and rebuild the hostel,” Sangma said, noting that the upgraded facility now provides a cleaner and more conducive environment. He added that quality educational infrastructure remains a top priority for the administration.
During the programme, the Chief Minister also launched the “She Thrives” initiative by installing a sanitary pad vending machine at the school. The programme, aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene and dignity, is set to be expanded to schools across the state.
Sangma emphasised that the initiative is intended to build confidence among young girls and change societal attitudes toward menstrual health.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui was also present at the event.
