SHILLONG, July 2: Khyndailad, the commercial and tourism hub of the city, is increasingly plagued by the presence of drug abusers, sparking concerns over safety and the area’s reputation.
Commonly known as Police Bazar, the junction attracts thousands of tourists daily. However, the growing number of drug users loitering in the area has led to reports of harassment involving both visitors and local residents. Bus shelters, intended for commuters, have reportedly become daytime resting spots for addicts.
The Federation of Shillong Hotels recently petitioned the Superintendent of Police to take immediate action, citing a rise in theft, robbery, and harassment linked to the drug menace. The federation expressed concern that the situation is damaging the image of the state’s premier tourist destination.
Residents also noted that pedestrians are frequently approached for money under various pretexts, with many believing the funds are used to purchase narcotics.Despite the regular deployment of police personnel in the area, locals claim there is a lack of sustained effort to remove abusers from public spaces.
Stakeholders and residents are now calling for stricter enforcement to restore safety and maintain the appeal of Police Bazar for locals and tourists alike.
