SHILLONG, July 3: The process to appoint the next Vice-Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) remains on hold as the Ministry of Education has yet to name the chairman of the search committee.
Sources told The Shillong Times that the NEHU Executive Council has already nominated two members to the panel. “The selection process will commence only after the chairman of the search committee is appointed,” sources said.
The Ministry had issued an advertisement on May 20 inviting applications for the post, ahead of the completion of incumbent Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla’s tenure on July 26. The notification stated that the VC should be a person of the highest competence, integrity and institutional commitment, with at least 10 years’ experience as a Professor in a university or in a reputed research or academic administrative organisation with proven academic leadership. Applicants are preferably not above 65 years of age.
The post carries a fixed monthly pay of Rs 2.10 lakh, a special allowance of Rs 11,250 and other admissible benefits. Applications were invited online through the Ministry’s SAMARTH portal from May 20 to June 18.
The delay in the selection process has come amid concerns over a prolonged leadership vacuum at the university following the Vice-Chancellor’s continued absence since November 2024.
