SHILLONG, July 4: Trade representatives from India and Bangladesh called for diversification of commodities traded through the Majai Land Customs Station (LCS), stressing that broadening the range of cross-border goods would boost economic activity and create new opportunities for businesses in the border region.
The call was made during a joint meeting held at Bholaganj LC Ghat No. 10 on July 3 between members of the Bholagonj Chonapathar Amdanekarak Group of Bangladesh’s Sylhet region and the United New Majai Exporters’ & Importers’ Association of Meghalaya.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral trade and commercial cooperation through the Majai LCS. The participants underscored the need for smoother movement of goods across the border and greater coordination between traders from the two countries. While limestone continues to be the principal commodity traded through the route, the delegations expressed keen interest in expanding the trade basket to include coal, agricultural produce, fresh fruits, and other commercially viable products.
The representatives observed that diversification of trade would not only open new business avenues but also generate employment and contribute to the economic growth of border areas in both India and Bangladesh.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of maintaining cordial relations among traders and fostering closer cooperation to address challenges affecting cross-border commerce.
Both associations agreed to hold regular interactions to identify new opportunities for trade expansion and resolve issues through mutual understanding and collaboration.
The representatives concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade through the Majai LCS and expressed optimism that increased commercial exchanges would benefit businesses, local communities and the economies of both countries.
The Bangladesh delegation was led by its president Md Shahab Uddin, vice-president Bosher Ahamed, and general secretary Md Najrul Islam.
