SHILLONG, July 5: The Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA), Meghalaya State Chapter, held its first state-level conference at Vivanta Shillong on Saturday, focusing on academic advancement and the evolving landscape of medical imaging.
Organised in association with United Imaging-Medikabazaar, the event drew approximately 80 radiologists, residents, and allied professionals. The programme featured intensive academic sessions, invited lectures, a radiology quiz, and research presentations.
During the event, Dr Sam Pamei, a senior radiologist at Supercare Hospital, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his longstanding contribution to the field in Meghalaya. Dr. Kartick Martiwar of Bethany Hospital received the “Dr. Akash Hadique Memorial Award” for academic excellence as a postgraduate resident.
In the competitive segments, the team from Bethany Hospital secured first prize in the radiology quiz, with the NEIGRIHMS team finishing second. Dr Wanboklang Nongsiej from Christian Medical College, Vellore, won the resident ePoster competition. Dr. Nikita Bhimjiyani and Dr E Khonglah, both residents of Shillong Medical College–Civil Hospital, secured second and third prizes, respectively.
IRIA Meghalaya State Chapter president Dr C Daniala noted the state’s progress in both diagnostic and interventional radiology. He highlighted that advanced investigations, such as cardiac MRI, are now available at NEIGRIHMS, making it one of the few centres in the Northeast to offer the service.
Chapter Secretary Dr Humsheer S Sethi discussed FDG PET/CT imaging in oncology. He noted that while Shillong currently lacks a PET/CT facility, local expertise is being maintained by reviewing scans of patients who seek imaging outside the state. Additionally, president-elect Dr Donboklang Lynser presented on complex abdominal interventional procedures, explaining how minimally invasive, image-guided treatments are increasingly benefiting patients in Meghalaya.
The sessions were adjudicated by guest speakers Dr Suman Hazarika of Apollo Hospitals, Guwahati, and Dr Rahul Ramchiary of Health City Hospital, Guwahati.
