Kolkata, July 6: Former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday took to the streets to protest against the alleged rape and murder incident at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district. Banerjee led a candlelight procession from her house in the Kalighat area of south Kolkata.

The police and central forces stopped Mamata and Trinamool leaders and workers in front of the house. However, the barricades were broken, and the procession moved forward, causing great tension in front of Mamata’s house. The police present there did not allow the situation to escalate.

The main slogan of the procession was ‘Justice for Baruipur’. The women’s leadership of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction was seen next to her. Dola Sen, Pratima Mandal, and Aparupa Poddar joined the procession with placards and candles in protest of the Baruipur incident.

A large number of police and central forces have been deployed in the area to control the situation. The procession was stopped by the police as soon as it left the lane of Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat house. The procession broke the barricade and moved forward. The procession went to Hazra crossing, where protests were held for some time.

Later, Mamata ended the procession at her Kalighat house. However, she did not address the party workers or media persons. Yesterday, a tense situation arose in Baruipur over the allegations of rape and murder of a minor. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the minor’s family members yesterday after learning of the incident.

The police took swift action. Three people, including the main accused, have been arrested. Three more have been detained. The Chief Minister assured that the culprits would get the strictest punishment. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the family on the phone last night. Police and central forces have been deployed in front of her house since yesterday.

The Trinamool leader expressed her anger over this. A Trinamool delegation went to Baruipur this afternoon. The delegation returned to Kolkata and reported the incident to Mamata. After that, Mamata held a candlelight procession in front of her house in Kalighat.
