National Kickboxing Day fuels Meghalaya’s medal ambitions

Shillong, July 5: The Meghalaya State Kickboxing Association has intensified preparations for the Senior and Masters National Kickboxing Championship, with around 50 athletes from across the state currently training ahead of the event to be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, from August 1 to 5.
The preparations were highlighted during the celebration of National Kickboxing Day, organised jointly by the MSKA and Team Revolution MMA Gym to commemorate the recognition of the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation as a National Sports Federation by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on July 2, 2021.
Speaking on the occasion, MSKA Working President Lorenzo Pearson Warjri said the association remains committed to producing athletes capable of excelling at the national and international levels. He noted that Meghalaya kickboxers have consistently represented India at major international competitions, including the World Cup and other international tournaments, since 2017.
Warjri highlighted the association’s achievements, revealing that since its inception in August 2017, MSKA athletes have won a total of 321 medals—104 gold, 102 silver and 115 bronze. The haul includes 67 international medals as well as nine medals at the NEHU All India Inter-University Games since 2019.The function also recognised Meghalaya’s international kickboxer Daniella I. Wanda Mylliemngap for winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Asian Kickboxing Championship in Cambodia. She later represented India at the 2025 WAKO World Kickboxing Championship in Abu Dhabi.
