TURA, July 9: After years of relying on generalised weather data, the Garo Hills is moving toward precision early warnings as officials finalised Albella Chidekgre in the Rongram block as the site for the region’s first dedicated Doppler Weather Radar (DWR).
The final inspection, conducted on Wednesday, marks a critical step for a region frequently battered by flash floods and landslides.
The project, part of the national ‘Mission Mausam’ initiative, aims to eliminate “weather-blind” spots in the Northeast and provide real-time data on micro-climatic shifts that often bypass larger regional monitoring stations.
The inspection team included officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) New Delhi and Shillong, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and representatives from the Chennai-based contractor, Pattern India Limited.
Crucially, the Nokma of Albella Chidekgre and local residents were involved in the final site confirmation. In the Garo Hills, community consent is essential for long-term project stability. Local residents in Rongram, who have long feared the unpredictable monsoon cycles, view the radar as a vital defense against sudden natural disasters.
With the site now confirmed, installation work is expected to begin shortly.
Once operational, the DWR will provide the precision needed for village-level alerts, strengthening the early warning system for the entire Garo Hills and filling a major gap in the state’s disaster preparedness network.
