SHILLONG, July 10: As the implementation of the phase-II of Jal Jeevan Mission enters its preparatory stage, the Meghalaya government has assured that ensuring access to safe and reliable drinking water will remain a key priority, with a renewed focus on the long-term sustainability of water supply systems and the delivery of functional household tap connections.
The assurance came after a review meeting on the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and the state’s preparedness for Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise N Marak informed that the meeting assessed the progress made under the ongoing mission and discussed preparations required for the next phase, with particular emphasis on implementation, operational sustainability and strengthening the delivery of functional household tap connections across the state.
The discussions during the meeting also focused on ensuring the long-term functioning of drinking water supply systems and sustaining the infrastructure created under the mission.
The state government is seeking to strengthen the delivery mechanism under the Har Ghar Jal initiative to ensure that household tap connections remain functional and provide a reliable water supply.
Marak said access to safe and dependable drinking water is closely linked to the government’s broader objective of building a healthier and more developed Meghalaya.
The minister also acknowledged the role of the chief minister in supporting infrastructure development and public welfare initiatives in the state.
He said the government’s continued focus on these sectors has contributed to the progress of development initiatives across Meghalaya.
The review assumes significance as the state prepares for the next phase of the Jal Jeevan Mission, with the sustainability of existing water supply systems and reliable service delivery emerging as key areas of focus.
