SHILLONG, July 15: A day after Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stormed out of a review meeting at the under-construction Meghalaya Legislative Assembly complex in Mawkasiang, New Shillong Township, over the slow progress of interior work on the main hall, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday admitted that execution of some projects in the New Shillong Township is slightly slow, even though the projects remain within the overall timeline.
Speaking to newsmen here, the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Urban Affairs said he would personally inspect all projects in the New Shillong Township on July 30 to review the work and ensure that they are expedited.
He attributed the delay in some projects to Meghalaya’s limited working season of only 6-7 months. “It seems that the rainfall is disturbing some projects this year,” Dhar said, adding that all projects are on schedule though some are facing minor delays.
Dhar pointed out that punishment clauses exist in the tenders if contractors miss deadlines, though the penalties vary from tender to tender. He made it clear that funds for contractors are being released on time and there are no funding issues.
Several major projects are currently underway in the New Shillong Township area, including the new Secretariat, the New Assembly building, Unity Mall, Mawkhanu Football Stadium, and a parade ground.
