MAWKYRWAT, July 15: A 62-year-old man who allegedly killed his younger sister over a suspected property dispute was apprehended by villagers and handed over to police in South West Khasi Hills on Wednesday.
Bailing Wahlang of Pyndenumsaw village was arrested by personnel from the Mawkyrwat Women Police Station after villagers caught him at Rohbah village early on Wednesday morning. The accused had been on the run since allegedly murdering his 56-year-old sister, Snity Wahlang, on Tuesday morning.
According to police, the Myntri of Pyndenumsaw village informed the Women Police Station around 7:30 am that the accused had been detained by villagers and was being held at the village Dorbar Hall. A police team, accompanied by an escort party, immediately rushed to the spot and took Wahlang into custody.
He was first taken to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital for medical examination, where he reportedly admitted to the crime before the medical officer. His clothes and blood samples were seized as evidence.
After the medical examination, Wahlang was brought to the Mawkyrwat Women Police Station and formally arrested. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed his involvement in the offence and expressed willingness to lead police to the weapon used in the crime.
The accused was later produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, who was requested to grant one-day police custody to enable recreation of the crime scene, recovery of the weapon, and to ascertain the exact motive behind the killing.
