SHILLONG, July 16: Mrs. N. Hills Tiny Tots East Ville Secondary School, Shillong, recently hosted Fernando Magallanes Mato, Cultural and Press Counsellor of the Spanish Embassy in India, for a webinar marking the launch of its “Passport to the World” project.
The session focused on the “Spain-India Dual Year 2026,” celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations. Discussions centered on cooperation in culture, tourism, and artificial intelligence. The event drew participation from several institutions, including St. Edmund’s College, BSF Senior Secondary School, MIT Meghalaya, and Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce.
Mato outlined the strategic importance of the 2026 milestone. He noted the Spanish Prime Minister’s February visit to India for the AI Impact Summit, explaining how technology is increasingly shaping diplomatic and economic ties.
During an interactive Q&A session, students questioned the diplomat on international exchange programs, career pathways in diplomacy, and Spanish culture. The event concluded with a postcard-writing activity, where students drafted messages to be formally delivered to the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi.
“These engagements allow students interested in Model United Nations and international affairs to interact directly with diplomats, providing practical experience in the field,” said Academic Supervisor Bala Syiem.
Organisers plan to continue the global lecture series following the positive reception of this inaugural event.
