SHILLONG, July 18: In a departure from the long-standing convention of political leaders inaugurating government infrastructure, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday invited a former Indian Army sepoy to inaugurate the newly constructed Block Integrated Development Complex at Sohiong, saying such honours should belong to members of the community who have served the nation.
The Rs 2.77-crore facility was formally inaugurated by Pyntngenlang Nongrang of Nongur village, who served for 17 years as a sepoy in the 1st Assam Regiment of the Indian Army.
Speaking at the event, Sangma said government buildings and public infrastructure have traditionally been inaugurated by chief guests or dignitaries, but maintained that the practice should evolve to recognise individuals from within the community whose contributions deserve public acknowledgement.
He said allowing respected local citizens to inaugurate important public assets makes such occasions more meaningful and strengthens the sense of ownership among the people.
The Block Integrated Development Complex has been established as a centralised administrative facility intended to improve service delivery, strengthen governance and enhance coordination among government departments, while bringing essential public services closer to residents.
The inauguration formed part of the state government’s programme at Sohiong, during which several completed projects were dedicated to the public and foundation stones were laid for new development initiatives across sectors, including tourism, education, rural infrastructure, water supply and agriculture.
The decision to have a former serviceman inaugurate the government building stood out as one of the defining moments of the programme, reflecting the government’s effort to recognise community members whose service extends beyond public office.
