London, July 18: Former Australia head coach Justin Langer is reportedly the frontrunner to take over as England’s Test coach following Andy Fowler’s withdrawal from the race.
According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to replace Brendon McCullum in the red-ball role after England endured disappointing Test series defeats to Australia (4-1) away and New Zealand (2-1) at home over the past eight months, along with several off-field controversies. If appointed, Langer’s move would mark a remarkable turnaround after he previously dismissed the idea of coaching England, saying in 2022 that he had never considered taking charge of Australia’s traditional rivals. The prospect of an Australian coaching England has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While some have welcomed the reported appointment, others have criticised the ECB for turning to another overseas coach. (Agencies)
