SHILLONG, July 18: Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Sanbor Shullai on Saturday announced a Rs 35 crore infrastructure initiative for the Shillong Cantonment area, while revealing a major policy shift that now allows for taller buildings in the locality.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Iewdak Municipal Market in Laban, Shullai stated that projects worth Rs 18 crore have already been sanctioned. These initiatives are designed to upgrade civic infrastructure and address long-standing developmental gaps for residents of the cantonment.
The Minister highlighted a significant breakthrough in building regulations, noting that the Ministry of Defence has issued a notification permitting constructions up to G+3. This ends a decades-long restriction that had stifled housing and urban development in the area.
Shullai attributed the change to sustained coordination between the state government, local stakeholders and the Defence Ministry.
He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for their support in resolving the issue.
He then reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents in both the municipal and cantonment zones of South Shillong through continued investment in public assets.
