SHILLONG, July 21: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit will join the ongoing students’ protest in the national capital in solidarity with the demand for quality education, even as the organisation has condemned the police action against peaceful demonstrators during Monday’s protest at Jantar Mantar. In a statement issued by KSU Delhi president Marbiang Khongwir, the union expressed anger over the reported lathi-charge, use of tear gas and violence against peaceful student protesters, stating that such incidents were deeply concerning in a democracy where citizens have a constitutional right to peacefully express their views.
The KSU Delhi Unit, however, clarified that it was not directing or compelling any member to participate in the protest, acknowledging that demonstrations of such a nature carry risks, including lathi-charge and arrest. It stated that participation would remain a personal and informed decision, but confirmed that some members of the union would be present at the protest site to stand in solidarity with the students and support their demand for quality education. The union maintained that remaining silent in the face of injustice would only allow it to continue and appealed to those who wished to support the movement to do so with a full understanding of the potential risks involved. Stressing that educated youth are the greatest strength of any nation, the KSU Delhi Unit called on students and young people to continue raising their voices peacefully, courageously and responsibly whenever justice and the future of students are at stake.
