Village warns of public backlash if sister’s ‘murderer’ gets bail in SWKH

MAWKYRWAT, July 21: Invoking the specter of vigilante justice, the Dorbar Shnong of Pyndenumsaw has warned authorities of an “uncontrollable” public backlash should a 62-year-old man accused of brutally murdering his own sister be granted bail or released.
The ultimatum was issued on Tuesday during a peace rally organised by the village council in South West Khasi Hills. Hundreds of residents, students, and family members marched from Madan Dommawlein through several localities to condemn the killing of 56-year-old Snity Wahlang, who was allegedly murdered by her brother, Bailing Wahlang.
The Dorbar Shnong and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District are demanding life imprisonment for the accused, citing the brutal nature of the crime and his alleged history of domestic volatility.
Anderson Syiemlieh, a member of the Pyndenumsaw Executive Committee, told the gathering that the village is currently gripped by fear. He revealed that after the murder, village youth and elders conducted an extensive manhunt through the night, eventually apprehending the suspect in Rohbah village before handing him over to the police.
“I want to thank the elders who managed to control the angry crowd that wanted to take revenge at the time of the arrest,” Syiemlieh said. He added that the accused allegedly showed no remorse and issued threats against the community even while in police custody.
“The most shocking part is that after we handed him over peacefully, he dared to threaten us inside the police station, saying, ‘If I am released from here, we will see.’
If a man can take the life of his own sister, he will not hesitate to target any of us. If the authorities release him, we will not be able to control the crowd. For their own safety, the people will take the law into their own hands,” Syiemlieh warned.
Plosbor Kharjahrin, Secretary of the KSU’s Environment & Cultural Cell, described the alleged manner of the killing as “inhumane” and called for the police to expedite the investigation.
“There is no place for such individuals in society,” Kharjahrin said. “The police must speed up the chargesheet and ensure he is imprisoned for life so he can no longer pose a threat to the public.”
The Dorbar Shnong maintained that while they have cooperated with the legal process thus far, the burden now lies with the judiciary and the police to ensure the accused remains behind bars to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the village.
