Ranchi, July 23: Several people were injured on Thursday after Congress and BJP workers allegedly hurled stones and eggs at each other during a protest in Jharkhand’s Ranchi, police said.
Police personnel and journalists were also among the injured in the incident, they said.
Trouble started when a large number of Congress workers marched towards the BJP headquarters in Ranchi to protest against the NEET paper leak issue. Soon, BJP workers also took to the streets to counter the Congress supporters, police said.
A police officer said elaborate security arrangements were put in place, including barricades and deployment of a large number of personnel.
“We are identifying the persons from both sides who hurled eggs, stones and tomatoes. Some of them have been detained. CCTV camera footage will be examined to identify more people,” Ranchi SP (Rural) Gaurav Goswami said.

12 Cong leaders booked for ‘throwing’ stones

Police have registered an FIR against 12 Congress leaders and workers for allegedly hurling various items, including bottles and stones, at police personnel during a BJP-led protest held here a day ago, leaving at least 15 of the cops injured, officials said on Thursday.

Cong seeks withdrawal of ‘false’ cases

The Maharashtra Congress on Thursday demanded withdrawal of “false” cases filed against hundreds of students in Mumbai, who participated in protests to show solidarity with the CJP-led students’ agitation in New Delhi. The Congress alleged illegal detention of students, registration of false FIRs and violation of privacy during the recent police action against student protesters.

Mumbai cop shunted after viral video

The Mumbai Police on Thursday ordered a probe and removed a police driver from the duty roster after a viral video purportedly showed him threatening student protesters with false narcotics charges if they returned to demonstrate.
The incident sparked a fierce political backlash, with the Congress accusing the state government of indulging in “hooliganism in khaki” to crush democratic dissent.

‘Passports may be cancelled’

People found directly involved in violence during the ongoing CJP protest may face cancellation of their passports, police sources said on Thursday.
Sources said Delhi Police had begun identifying, through CCTV footage and video recordings, the individuals who were directly involved in rioting and other acts of violence during the protest. (PTI)
