SHILLONG, July 23: Preserving the Khasi language is essential to safeguarding the identity, culture and collective memory of the Khasi people, speakers stressed at the Rev Dr John Roberts Annual Memorial Lecture 2026 hel`d at John Roberts Theological College, Mawklot, on Thursday.
The annual lecture focused on the enduring relevance of indigenous languages in an era of rapid social change, using the life and work of Rev Dr Roberts to underscore how language can bridge education, faith and community life.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr Amena N Passah, former Head and Professor of the Department of History at the North-Eastern Hill University, who traced Rev Dr Roberts’ contribution to theological education and Christian ministry through the Khasi language.
She said his work went beyond religious service, reflecting a conscious effort to communicate with people in their own language and thereby strengthen both education and social transformation.
His commitment, she noted, demonstrated that the use of Khasi in teaching and ministry was instrumental in making knowledge more accessible while reinforcing the cultural identity of the people.
Reflecting on the historical evolution of the language, Dr Passah recalled the pioneering contributions of Welsh missionary Thomas Jones, who introduced the Roman script to Khasi, and poet Soso Tham, whose literary works helped shape Khasi literature and cultural consciousness.
She observed that each, in different ways, contributed to the growth of Khasi as a language of learning, literature and faith, leaving a legacy that continues to influence generations.
The lecture stressed that language is not merely a medium of communication but a repository of history, traditions, values and worldview. It warned that the loss of language inevitably weakens cultural identity and disconnects communities from their heritage.
Participants were urged to view the preservation and promotion of Khasi not only as a cultural responsibility but also as an investment in the future of the community.
The programme began with a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of Rev. Dr. Roberts before the annual memorial lecture.
