Institute remembers Dr Abdul Kalam on his 11th death anniversary
SHILLONG, July 27: IIM Shillong on Monday paid tribute to former President and Bharat Ratna Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on his 11th death anniversary by unveiling an eight-foot-tall life-size bronze statue in his honour, commemorating his enduring association with the institute where he delivered his final lecture on July 27, 2015.
The bronze statue, measuring eight feet in height, 3.25 feet in width and 3.5 feet in depth, has been installed as a lasting tribute to Dr Kalam’s contribution to the nation and his lifelong commitment to education, scientific advancement and innovation.
The statue was unveiled by Chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG), Shishir Kumar Bajoria.
Remembering the former President’s final visit to the institute on July 27, 2015, IIM Shillong recalled that Dr. Kalam had delivered an inspiring lecture titled “How to Make Our Planet More Liveable” before collapsing during the programme. His address highlighted the shared responsibility of governments, institutions, scientists, industry leaders and citizens, especially the youth, in building a sustainable future through innovation, environmental consciousness, ethical leadership and responsible action.
Fondly remembered by students as “Kalam Sir”, Dr Kalam continues to inspire generations through his humility, compassion and unwavering faith in the transformative power of young minds, the institute said.
IIM Shillong said it remains committed to advancing Dr Kalam’s vision of nurturing enlightened leaders through excellence in management education, research, innovation, sustainability and ethical leadership. The institute added that the message he shared during his final interaction with students continues to serve as a guiding philosophy for future generations to dream with purpose, lead with integrity and work towards a more sustainable, peaceful and inclusive world.
The life-size statue was unveiled in the presence of BoG members Atul Kulkarni and Nitin Sharma, Director of IIM Shillong Prof. (Dr.) Arun Mohan Sherry, Chief Administrative Officer Col. Dinesh Adhikari (Retd), faculty members, officers, staff and students.
