Inclusion of Garo language in 8th Schedule
TURA: The Garo Graduates Union has unanimously decided to move the government and the concerned department for the inclusion of the Garo language in the 8th Schedule and to also ensure that the existing job reservation policy of the state is maintained.
The decision to move for the inclusion of the language and maintaining of the reservation policy which gives 40 per cent in the appointment and promotions in government jobs for the Garo, Khasi and Jaintias was taken during the recent 44th annual general conference of the GGU held at the Christian Girls Higher secondary School in Tura.
Resolutions were also adopted to move the government to ensure early appointment into the vacant posts of assistant directors and joint directors in the Agriculture department for East, West and south Garo Hills districts.
The union also pointed out that the post of Additional Director of School Education and Literacy for Garo Hills, headquartered at Tura, has remained vacant for a very long time with no new appointment.
The Garo Graduates Union further raised the issue of several vacancies into various educational posts in the Garo Hills, namely posts of Sub-Divisional School Education and Literacy at Ampati and Williamnagar, vacant posts of Principals of Ampati Govt Higher Secondary School, Government girls Higher Secondary School at Ringrey, Tura, Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Tura, Resubelpara Government Government Higher Secondary School, Dadenggre Government Higher Secondary School and Kharkutta Government Higher Secondary School.
The union has called for the immediate appointment into all these vacant positions.
The union was also critical of the poor road conditions in Tura, the second largest town in Meghalaya and has called on the concerned department to take necessary steps to ensure early blacktopping of all vehicular roads under the municipality area.
During the conference the 29th issue of Mikaoa, the annual magazine of the union was released.
