SHILLONG: Come Teachers’ Day on Monday and majority of the teachers’ community in the State would be boycotting the celebrations due to the non-payment of their arrears and dues.

It would be an embarrassing moment for the State Education department to see hundreds of teachers boycotting the Teachers’ Day celebration in the State.

Around 300 teachers associated with the Khasi Jaintia Higher Secondary Adhoc Teachers’ Association (KJHSATA) have decided to boycott the Teachers’ day celebration in the State after the Education Minister failed to respond to their demands for payment of salary which has been pending since March. They have called for a sit-in protest and observation of black flag day at Madan Iewrynghep on Monday.

On the other hand, the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association has also decided to hold a rally at Students’ Field, Jaiaw from 1 pm onwards on Monday in continuation of their agitation to press upon the State Government to fulfill their demands which includes implementation of the revised pay and release of arrears for college teachers.

The Meghalaya College Non-Teaching Employees’ Association has also threatened to march from Madan Iewrynghep (Fire Brigade) till Secretariat on Monday.

Meanwhile, taking strong cognizance of the plights of teachers, the State BJP has slammed the State Government for not clearing the dues of the teachers of the State.

Commenting on the proposed boycott of Teachers’ Day by the teachers, State BJP general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said, “It would be quite sad for both teachers and students as the students look forward to Teacher’s Day celebration with lot of anticipation for the sheer spirit of the occasion.”
