Igu dance troupe all set to perform at R-Day parade

Itanagar: The Igu Dance troupe, which has been selected as one of the Republic Day parade tableau for this year to represent Arunachal Pradesh at New Delhi, is all set to enthral the national audience.

The fully prepared troupe left for the national capital yesterday with all their necessary costumes, dress and traditional musical instruments, an official release said.

Ten young artists who got the opportunity to perform on the occasion were Yona Mele, Ando Elapra, Seteka Mili, Prendi Miso, Mompa Linggi, Ajome Melo, Jooni Elapra, Nina Mele, Shila Linggi and Athupi Aprawe, the release said adding they would get an opportunity to showcase the rich cultural heritage, distinctive costumes, handlooms and handicrafts of the Idu Mishmi tribe of the state who are widely known for their expert craftsmanship.

Among the tribe, the dance is called “Reh Naya” as the dance is also an important aspect of the Reh Festival of the tribe, which is celebrated every February.

Traditionally, an Igu represents the central icon in the arena of religious beliefs and practises in Idu society and the dance is an important aspect of their faith and beliefs. On the occasion of festivals, the community and the performing priest come with their colourful dresses and costumes. Rajya Sabha MP Mukut Mithi, his legislator son Mutchu Mithi, Lower Dibang Valley DC Shiv Kumar and Inju Linggi, president of Idu Mishmi Cultural and Literary Secretary were among others who extended best wishes to the artists, the release added.
