Margao: A late goal by defender Biswajit Shah helped Sporting Clube de Goa edge past Royal Wahingdoh 2-1 in a come-from-behind win and keep their hopes alive for the knock out stage in the Group “A” league match of the Federation Cup football at Nehru Stadium, here on Sunday.

Defender Biswajit Saha scored the winner in the 89th minute which earned him the man of the match award.

The first-half was a drab encounter with neither teams showing urgency in their attack.

Royal Wahingdoh, who needed a win to stay in contention for a semi-finals berth, broke the dead lock in the 28th minute when Jackichand Singh headed in.

Sporting though had their chances in the first-half but failed to get past the opposition defense.

Sporting came back strongly after switch of ends as they made inroads into the rival half more often and found the equaliser in the 53rd minute via an Anthony Wolfe strike.

Sporting Clube de Goa, who needed a win to keep their chances alive for the knock out stage, made a late charge and found the winner in the 89th minute when substitute Mauvin Borges made a run on the left flank and sent a low cross which defender Biswajit Saha dispatched it into the net on the run.

Sporting opened their account with today’s win to gather three points from as many games, while Royal Wahingdoh are also in a similar position. (PTI)
