Agartala: The Tripura Government has recruited about 98 per cent un-trained teachers in different high and higher secondary schools in the state in the last few years, state education minister Tapan Chakraborty revealed in the assembly.

According to the statement, the department had recruited over 5,000 teachers in different schools of which barely 1.77 per cent teachers are having necessary teacher training approved by the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE).

Altogether 5,860 teachers in different categories were recruited as teachers since 2009 and only 104 of them had possessed the necessary training approved by NCTE, recognised as eligible, he said, adding that less than 20 per cent of the total teachers in the state were trained as per national guideline.

Spelling out the details, Chakraborty said only 63 Post-Graduate Teachers (PGT) and 41 Graduate Teachers (GT) was included in trained teachers’ category while 5,756 candidates recruited were not complying with the necessary standards of the national criteria.

Meanwhile, Opposition Congress blamed that only 9.01 per cent people in Tripura were educated and the state government did not initiate any attempt to improve the situation rather intentionally stayed away from implementation of National Curriculum Framework (NCF) introduced in 2005 by almost all the state to improve education system. “The penetration of schools, colleges, universities and technical institutions are lowest in Tripura, among other NE states, and the education system state has been suffering from un-trained, inadequate number of teachers,” Leader of Opposition Ratan Lal Nath added.
