SHILLONG: UDP working president Bindo Mathew Lanong has termed the decision of the State Government to extend the term of the GHADC by another six months as ‘highly illegal’. “The Government should have honoured the constitutional provision. It cannot go on extending the term of the Council in this manner,” Lanong stated over telephone on Thursday. He also questioned whether the Government would again extend the term if the proposed amendment bill of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to increase the number of seats as indicated in  the Agreed Text Settlement is not approved by the Parliament.
He also stated that this overstay of the GHADC MDCs will create a bad precedence.
“The Government can extend the term of the Council for minute reasons,” Lanong said.Lanong was of the view that the Government should have conducted elections to the GHADC along with the KHADC and the JHADC.”The Government could have held a special election for the extended seats once the proposed amendment bill get the approval of the Parliament,” he said.
