SHILLONG: Opposition parties in Meghalaya have decided to seek the intervention of the BJP-led Government at the Centre over the repeated extensions to the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council by the Congress-led MUA-II Government in the State.
“We have decided to seek the intervention of the Union Government over the State Government’s decision to extend the term of the Council only to serve their political interests,” UDP working president Bindo M Lanong told newsmen here on Monday.
He termed the extension of the GHADC tenure four consecutive times as highly illegal, undemocratic and unconstitutional.
He claimed that the Congress Government extended the term  of the Council only to serve their political interests by allowing the Congress-led Executive Committee to continue in office even after the expiry of its term.
The opposition parties also demanded that the State Government should immediately conduct the election to the GHADC.
