‘Mukul trying to please one person’

SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Mukul Sangma of undermining the KHADC and the JHADC on the proposed amendments of the Sixth Schedule which is likely to be tabled in the upcoming budget session of Parliament.
Nongrum lamented that the Government did not take into confidence either the KHADC or the JHADC into confidence on the proposed amendments despite the fact that the proposed amendments would be applicable to both the councils besides the GHADC.
“Both the KHADC and the JHADC are in the dark about the nitty-gritty of the proposed amendments. This clearly reflects that the Government is not bothered about the two councils,” the KHADC CEM alleged.
Nongrum also expressed surprise at the Chief Minister’s decision to convene an all-party meeting on January 16 and to invite the district councils to discuss on the demand for constitution of the party-less “regional council’.
“Everyone is aware that this demand for constitution of a party-less regional council is being orchestrated by one single individual. The Chief Minister has convened this all-party meeting just to please one person. This is not a healthy trend since the institution is higher than an individual. But the Chief Minister feels the other way round,” Nongrum said, without naming anyone.
Nongrum also wanted to know whether the suggestions submitted by the KHADC to the State Government in 2013 on amendments to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution was incorporated and forwarded to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Asked about the proposal of the UDP to convene an all-party meeting of MDCs to discuss the demand for constitution of the regional council as demanded by the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, Nongrum said he was yet to fix the date.
