Two convicted for rape, attempt to murder

Agartala:  A local court of South Tripura has convicted a man and his cousin brother on charges of raping and attempting to murder his wife after kidnapping her last year in Murapara of Udaipur under Gomati district.
The District and Session court sentenced Biswajit Bhowmik (33) to 12-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. His cousin Shankar Mandal is sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and asked to pay a fine of Rs 5,000.
The incident was reported to police on February 5 last year. The police had arrested the accused three days after the incident and submitted charge sheet within two months.
According to police, a day before the incident, the couple had a quarrel and the lady was severely assaulted.
Somehow, they escaped and took shelter in a neighbouring house. On the following day, the victim lodged a complaint with a local CPI-M leader Shankar Mandal and happened to be a cousin brother of her husband Biswajit.
Biswajit told police that in the evening, both the convict planned to kill the victim. Shankar was sent to pick up the victim with false information that Biswajit met an accident.
Accordingly, she was taken to a nearby forest reserve after blindfolding her. Both of them then raped her and left the place thinking that the victim died but the next morning the villagers rescued the lady. (UNI)
